Objective: This research study investigated the effect of new decontamination protocols on the bonding capacity of saliva-contaminated monolithic zirconia (MZ) ceramics cemented with two different monomer-containing self-adhesive resin cements. Materials and Methods: Standardized tooth preparations (4 mm. axial height) were performed for eighty human maxillary premolars under constant water cooling system. Eighty monolithic zirconia crowns (Whitepeaks Supreme Monolith) (n = 8/10 groups) were manufactured by CAD-CAM. Specimens were kept in the artificial saliva at pH = 7.3 for 1 minute at 37°C except control groups. The specimens have not been prealumina blasted and grouped according to cleaning methods and resin cements: control groups (C) (no saliva contamination + GPDM + 4-META (N) (CN) and 10-MDP (M) containing resin cement (CM), alumina blasted (AL) + GPDM + 4-META (ALN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (ALM), zirconium oxide containing universal cleaning agent (IC) applied + GPDM + 4-META (N) (ICN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (ICM), pumice (P) applied + GPDM + 4-META (PN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (PM), and air-water spray (AW) applied + GPDM + 4-META (AWN) and 10-MDP containing resin cement (AWM)). Monobond Plus was applied to all surfaces for 40 seconds before cementation. The thermal cycle was applied at 5,000 cycles after cementation. The crowns were tested in tensile mode at a speed of 1 mm/min. The mode of failure was recorded. SEM examinations were carried out at different magnifications. Data were analyzed using rank-based Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: No significant differences were found between the surface treatments and between the two types of resin cements. Interaction effects between surface treatments and resin cements were found to be significant by two-way ANOVA analysis. ICM group resulted in significantly better bond strength results compared with CN. ICM was found to result in better bond strength results compared with PM. The combination of universal cleaning agent and 10-MDP containing resin cement had significantly the highest cementation bond strength values. The increasing order of mean tensile bond strength values of decontamination protocols was C < AW < P < AL < IC. The mean tensile bond strength of 10-MDP containing resin cement was slightly higher than GPDM + 4-META containing resin cement. Conclusions: Universal cleaning agents can be preferred as an efficient cleaning method with 10-MDP-containing cement after saliva contamination for better adhesive bond strength of 4 mm crown preparation height of monolithic zirconia ceramics.

This study aims to investigate the impact of storage conditions for crown fragments (specifically, whether they were stored within a tooth rescue box or in tap water) on their adhesion to fractured teeth when subjected to two different adhesive systems (namely, total etch and self etch). Sixty maxillary premolars were sectioned to obtain tooth fragments. These fragments were stored briefly (2 hours) and reattached in the following groups: Group 1 (fragments stored in tooth rescue box and reattached with etch and rinse (E&R) technique), Group 2 (fragments stored in tap water and reattached with E&R technique), Group 3 (fragments stored in tooth rescue box and reattached with self-etch (SE) technique), and Group 4 (fragments stored in tap water and reattached SE technique). After reattachment, the bonded tooth fragments underwent thermal cycling (500 cycles, 5-55 °C) and bond strength testing using a universal testing machine. Two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's tests were used for bond strength comparison (p ≤ 0.05). A two-parameter Weibull distribution was conducted to evaluate the reliability of the storage medium and adhesion modality on bond strength. The results showed that measured shear bond values (MPa ± Standard deviation (SD); arranged in descending order) for each group were: Group 2 (Tap water/E&R = 6.5 ± 2.1), Group 1 (Rescue box/E&R = 6.0 ± 2.5), Group 4 (Tap water/E&R = 5.1 ± 2.8), and Group 3 (Rescue box/SE = 3.6 ± 3.2). Significant differences were found only between Groups 2 and 3 (p = 0.002). In conclusion, storing crown fragments in a tooth rescue box did not significantly affect the shear bond strength of the restored tooth. However, fragments reattached using the self-etch technique showed comparable shear bond strength but a higher rate of adhesive failures compared to the E&R technique.

PURPOSE: To comprehensively assess the existing literature regarding the rapidly evolving in vivo application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for potential applications, benefits, and challenges in dental implant surgery. METHODS: Electronic and manual searches were conducted in PubMed MEDLINE, EMBASE, Biosis, and Cochrane databases by two reviewers following the PICOS search strategy. This involved using medical subject headings (MeSH) terms, keywords, and their combinations. RESULTS: Sixteen studies were included in this systematic review. Of the 16, nine studies focused on preoperative planning and follow-up phases, four evaluated image-guided implant surgery, while three examined artifact reduction techniques. The current literature highlights several MRI protocols that have recently investigated and evaluated the in vivo feasibility and accuracy, focusing on its potential to provide surgically relevant quantitative and qualitative parameters in the assessment of osseointegration, peri-implant soft tissues, surrounding anatomical structures, reduction of artifacts caused by dental implants, and geometric accuracy relevant to implant placement. Black Bone and MSVAT-SPACE MRI, acquired within a short time, demonstrate improved hard and soft tissue resolution and offer high sensitivity in detecting pathological changes, making them a valuable alternative in targeted cases where CBCT is insufficient. Given the data heterogeneity, a meta-analysis was not possible. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this systematic review highlight the potential of dental MRI, within its indications and limitations, to provide perioperative surgically relevant parameters for accurate placement of dental implants.

The aim of this study was to evaluate cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of calcium-silicate based sealers and comparing them with a gold standard-an epoxy-based sealant. Two experimental cell lines were used, gingival fibroblasts (hGF) and monocyte/macrophage peripheral blood cell line (SC). The cytotoxicity (XTT assay) and genotoxicity (comet assay) were evaluated both after 24-h and 48-h incubation. Additionally, after 48-h incubation, the cell apoptosis and cell cycle progression was detected. BioRoot Flow induced a significant decrease in hGF cells viability compared to the negative control groups both after 24-h (p < 0.001) and 48-h incubation (p < 0.01). In group with SC cells, after 24-h incubation significant increase in cells viability was detected for AH Plus Bioceramic Sealer in comparison to negative control (p < 0.05). BioRoot Flow and BioRoot RCS can be considered potentially genotoxic for the hGF cells after 48-h incubation (> 20% DNA damage). BioRoot Flow and BioRoot RCS, may have potential genotoxic effects and induce apoptosis in hGF cells which may irritate periapical tissues, resulting in a delayed healing. The findings of the study would be useful in selection of an appropriate sealant for root canal filling without causing cytotoxicity and genotoxicity.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the mechanical durability of monolithic zirconia implant-supported fixed dental prostheses (iFDP) design on one implant, with a distal and a mesial extension cantilever bonded to a titanium base compared to established designs on two implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Roxolid Tissue level (TL), and tissue level x (TLX) implants were used to manufacture screw-retained 3-unit iFDPs (n = 60, n = 10 per group), with following configurations (X: Cantilever; I: Implant, T: Test group, C: Control group): T1: X-I-X (TL); T2: X-I-X (TLX); T3: I-I-X (TL); T4: I-I-X (TLX); C1: I-X-I (TL); C2: I-X-I (TLX). The iFDPs were thermomechanically aged and subsequently loaded until fracture using a universal testing machine. The failure load at first crack (Finitial) and at catastrophic fracture (Fmax) were measured and statistical evaluation was performed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc tests. RESULTS: The mean values ranged between 190 ± 73 and 510 ± 459 N for Finitial groups, and between 468 ± 76 and 1579 ± 249 N for Fmax, respectively. Regarding Finitial, neither the implant type, nor the iFDP configuration significantly influenced measured failure loads (all p > 0.05). The choice of implant type did not show any significant effect (p > 0.05), while reconstruction design significantly affected Fmax data (I-I-Xa < X-I-Xb < I-X-Ic) (p < 0.05). The mesial and distal extension groups (X-I-X) showed fractures only at the cantilever extension site, while the distal extension group (I-I-X) showed one abutment and one connector fracture at the implant/reconstruction interface. CONCLUSION: Results suggest that iFDPs with I-X-I design can be recommended regardless of tested implant type followed by the mesial and distal extension design on one implant abutment (X-I-X).

PURPOSE: The study evaluated the clinical performance of partial indirect resin composite (PIRC) restorations with "proximal box elevation" (PBE) placed in molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-three patients received 80 posterior PIRC (SR Nexco, Ivoclar Vivadent) restorations. Large posterior defects with cuspal loss and deep cervical margins were included in the study. PBE was performed prior to preparation and impression making. Two independent observers evaluated the restorations using the FDI criteria (scores 1-5) for esthetic, functional, and biological properties. Patients were recalled at 6 months and 1, 2, and 3 years. Overall success rates were calculated (Kaplan-Meier analysis) and compared (log-rank tests) according to baseline variables. The impact of the baseline variables on the failure of the restorations was analyzed (multiple proportional Cox regression). RESULTS: Seventy-nine (98.7%), 69 (88.4%), 66 (92.9%), 44 (86.2%) and 45 (91.8%) PIRCs completed their follow up at baseline, 6 months, and 1, 2 and 3 years, respectively. In total, 10 failures were observed: 5 with partial loss, 4 with material chipping, and one with secondary caries, yielding an overall success rate of 87.5% and a survival rate of 93.8%, with a mean observation time of 26.5 ± 13.6 months. CONCLUSIONS: PIRCs with PBE demonstrated a high survival rate and satisfactory esthetic properties. Failure was less likely for PIRC restorations with partial cuspal coverage (onlay) compared to full cuspal coverage (overlay).

Purpose With an increase in patients' aesthetic demands and advancements in dental technologies, tooth-colored materials have grown in popularity. This study aimed to statistically analyze the scientific output of zirconia.Methods Articles published between 1980 and 2021 were downloaded from the Web of Science database and analyzed using various statistical/bibliometric methods. Correlations were evaluated using the Spearman's coefficient. Time-series forecasting was used to predict the number of articles in the coming years.Results Of the 18773 recordings, 16703 (88.9%) were articles. China contributed the most to the literature (n=3345, 20%). The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most active institution (n=666). Furthermore, Ceramics International was the journal that published the most articles (N=611). The Journal of Catalysis was the journal with the highest average number of citations per article (average number of citations, 81.4). A high level of significant correlation was found between the number of articles produced by different countries on zirconia and gross domestic product (r=0.742, P<0.001).Conclusions It is expected that zirconia research will continue to increase parallel with the increase in aesthetic expectations. Recent trends include dental implants, resin cement, surface roughness, shear bond strength, monolithic zirconia, osseointegration, flexural strength, aging, geochemistry, zircon U-Pb dating, detrital zircon, adhesion, computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing, bond strength, adsorption, titanium, spark plasma sintering, corrosion, SEM, zirconium dioxide, surface modification, XRD, finite-element analysis, and yttria-stabilized zirconia. Clinicians and scientists interested in zirconia can refer to this comprehensive article as a useful resource for the relevant global and multidisciplinary outcomes.

This study aimed to compare preoperative data relevant to third molar surgery based on radiographic orthopantomography (OPG) and orthopantomogram-like MR images (MR-OPG), using five different MR protocols. X-ray-based OPG and OPG-like MRI reconstructions from DESS, SPACE-STIR, SPACE-SPAIR, T1-VIBE-Dixon, and UTE sequences were acquired in 11 patients undergoing third molar surgery, using a 15-channel mandibular coil. Qualitative (image quality, susceptibility to artifacts, positional relationship, contact/non-contact of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN), relationship to maxillary sinus, IAN continuity, root morphology) and quantitative (tooth length, retromolar distance, distance to the IAN, and distance to the mandible margin) parameters of the maxillary and mandibular third molars were assessed regarding inter-reader agreement and quantitative discrepancies by three calibrated readers. Radiation-free MR-OPGs generated within clinically tolerable acquisition times, which exhibited high image quality and low susceptibility to artifacts, showed no significant differences compared with X-ray-based OPGs regarding the assessment of quantitative parameters. UTE MR-OPGs provided radiographic-like images and were best suited for assessing qualitative preoperative data (positional relationship, nerve contact/non-contact, and dental root morphology) relevant to third molar surgery. For continuous and focal nerve imaging, DESS MR-OPG was superior. MR-OPGs could represent a shift towards indication-specific and modality-oriented perioperative imaging in high-risk oral and maxillofacial surgery.

PURPOSE: To measure the wear at the implant interface between the Grade 4 titanium (Ti) of the implant and frameworks fabricated using two additively manufactured alloys (Ti alloy and cobalt-chromium [Co-Cr]) pre- and post-artificial aging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three-unit frameworks supported by two implants were additively manufactured (Atlantis; Dentsply Sirona) using Ti and Co-Cr dental alloys. Two implants (OsseoSpeed EV, Astra Tech; Dentsply Sirona) were torqued on each non-engaging framework. The assembled implant-frameworks were secured into polyurethane foam blocks. Groups were created based on the material and surface assessed: framework (Ti-framework and Co-Cr-framework groups) and implant (Ti-implant group). Two subgroups were created depending on the location: premolar (PM) and molar (M). Computed tomography images were obtained pre- (as manufactured) and post-simulated mastication procedures. The pre- and post-simulated mastication files of each specimen were aligned using the best-fit algorithm using a metrology program. Wear was measured by calculating the volumetric discrepancies at the implant interface on 64 measurement points per area analyzed. Three-way ANOVA and Tukey tests were used to analyze the data (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The mean volumetric discrepancy values ranged from 0.8 to 3.1 µm among all the subgroups tested. The group (framework vs. implant) (p < 0.001) and tooth location (p < 0.001) were significant factors of the mean volumetric discrepancy values obtained. The framework group presented with significantly lower volumetric discrepancy mean values (1 µm) compared with the implant group (3 µm), whereas the premolar area obtained significantly lower mean volumetric discrepancy values (1.9 µm) compared with the molar location (2.3 µm). CONCLUSIONS: Volumetric discrepancies were found at the implant-framework interface tested between the pre- and post-artificial aging measurements ranging from 1 to 3 µm after 1,200,000 cyclic loading that simulated approximately 12 months of function.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of preparation characteristics on the survival, success, and clinical performance of partial indirect lithium disilicate restorations with immediate dentin sealing. METHODS: This retrospective clinical study evaluated partial indirect lithium disilicate restorations placed in conjunction with Immediate Dentin Sealing (IDS) in (pre)molar teeth between March 2018 and May 2021. The restorations were luted using pre-heated composite. The study focused on survival, success, and clinical performance, which was evaluated using the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Results were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier estimates, log-rank tests, and Fisher exact tests. RESULTS: Partial indirect lithium disilicate restorations (N = 454) were evaluated in 214 patients. The mean evaluation time was 37 months, with a cumulative survival rate of 99.2 % and a cumulative success rate of 97.6 %. Fourteen failures occurred, with endodontic pathology as the predominant failure mode, followed by secondary caries, debonding, and tooth fracture. No statistically significant influence of the preparation variables on survival and success was observed (p > .05). The short-term clinical performance was clinically acceptable in > 90 % of the evaluations. CONCLUSIONS: This retrospective study on partial indirect lithium disilicate restorations in conjunction with IDS demonstrates survival and success rates of 99.2 and 96.7 % over a mean evaluation period of 37 months. A marked influence of the studied preparation characteristics on the survival, success and clinical performance of lithium disilicate partial restorations could not be demonstrated. Partial lithium disilicate restorations exhibit good clinical performance in >90 % of the cases. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The results of this study suggest that preparation characteristics had no significant impact on the survival, success, and clinical performance of partial lithium disilicate restorations in conjunction with IDS. Results show good clinical performance and high survival and success rates, regardless of preparation characteristics.

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological aspects and distribution of granules composed of deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) and human dentin-derived bone graft (HDBG) into a putty consistency mixture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: DBBM or HDBG were mixed with an alginate-based hydrogel at two different granule/hydrogel ratio (1:1 and 1:3) and divided into four test groups while two control groups were composed of DBBM or HDBG free of hydrogel. Groups of specimens were cross-sectioned for morphological evaluation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at backscattered electrons mode. Details on the dimensions and pores' size of DBBM and HDBG were evaluated after mixing different amounts of particles and alginate-based hydrogels. RESULTS: Microscopic analyses revealed a size of DBBM granules ranging from 750 up to 1600 µm while HDBG particles showed particle size ranging from 375 up to 1500 µm. No statistical differences were identified regarding the size of granules (p > 0.5). The mean values of pores' size of DBBM particles were noticed at around 400 µm while HDBG particles revealed micro-scale pores of around 1-3 µm promoted by the dentin tubules (p < 0.05). The lowest distance between particles was at 125 µm for HDBG and 250 µm for DBBM when the particle content was increased. On decreasing the particles' content, the distance between particles was larger for DBBM (~ 1000 µm) and HDBG (~ 1100 µm). In fact, statistically significant differences were found when the content of granules increased (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The increased content of bioactive ceramic granules in a putty consistency mixture with hydrogel decreased the space among granules that can promote a high ceramic density and stimulate the bone growth over the healing process. Macro-scale pores on bovine bone mineral granules stimulate the formation of blood vessels and cell migration while the micro-scale pores of dentin-derived granules are proper for the adsorption of proteins and growth of osteogenic cells on the bone healing process. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: A high amount of bioactive ceramic granules should be considered when mixing with hydrogels as a putty material since that result in small spaces among granules maintaining the bone volume over the bone healing process. Deproteinized bovine bone mineral granules have macro-scale pores providing an enhanced angiogenesis while dentin-derived granules possess only micro-scale pores for the adsorption of proteins and proliferation of osteogenic cells on the bone healing process. Further studies should evaluate the combination of different bioactive ceramic materials for enhanced bone healing.

OBJECTIVES: This clinical study aims to analyze the levels of cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of persons with bruxism and to compare the efficacy of botulinum toxin (botox) and occlusal splint treatments through biomarkers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 40 patients with bruxism were selected according to the clinical examination and anamnesis of which 20 received occlusal splint treatment and 20 botox treatment. GCF samples were taken from the patients before and after treatment. Cortisol, DHEA, and TNF-α levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test. The change in measurements between time and groups and the time-group interaction were tested by repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference between the cortisol levels before and after treatment in both groups (p = 0.001). In individuals with bruxism, a statistically significant decrease in cortisol levels was observed after both treatments (p < 0.05), while DHEA levels increased after treatment but were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between TNF-α intra-group measurements (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Stress and inflammatory biomarkers were found to be associated with bruxism. Cortisol levels decreased in people with bruxism after treatment with both occlusal splint and botox. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Both splint and botox treatments were effective for bruxism by reducing the stress levels.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review studies on various occlusal splint materials and describe their mechanical and chemical properties. METHODS: MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science searches were conducted for in vitro studies focusing on occlusal splint materials. Two reviewers performed an assessment of the identified studies and data abstraction independently, and this was complimented by an additional hand search. The articles were limited to those in the English language that were published between January 1st, 2012, and December 1st, 2022. RESULTS: The initial search yielded 405 search results of which 274 were selected for full-text review following abstract evaluation. 250 articles that did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded, and the remaining 25 articles (with 1 article identified from the reference lists of included articles) providing mechanical and chemical values were used in this review. Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) -based occlusal splint materials showed the highest values in terms of hardness, wear resistance, flexural strength, flexural modulus, e-modulus, and fracture toughness. The material group with the highest water sorption and water solubility was 3D printed (PR) splint materials. In addition, the lowest degree of double bond conversion was also observed in this group of materials. CONCLUSIONS: The outcome of this review suggests that mechanically and chemically acceptable properties can be attained with PMMA-based occlusal splint materials using both conventional and digital production methods. PR splint materials should not be considered as the primary choice for long-term treatments due to their low mechanical and chemical properties. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This review provides clinical recommendations for selecting the appropriate material and fabrication method for occlusal splints while taking the patients' needs and the materials´ mechanical and chemical properties into account.

Cognitive impairment (CI) is very common in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) and progressively develops on a spectrum from mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) to full dementia (PDD). Identification of PD patients at risk of developing cognitive decline, therefore, is unmet need in the clinic to manage the disease. Previous studies reported that oral microbiota of PD patients was altered even at early stages and poor oral hygiene is associated with dementia. However, data from single modalities are often unable to explain complex chronic diseases in the brain and cannot reliably predict the risk of disease progression. Here, we performed integrative metaproteogenomic characterization of salivary microbiota and tested the hypothesis that biological molecules of saliva and saliva microbiota dynamically shift in association with the progression of cognitive decline and harbor discriminatory key signatures across the spectrum of CI in PD. We recruited a cohort of 115 participants in a multi-center study and employed multi-omics factor analysis (MOFA) to integrate amplicon sequencing and metaproteomic analysis to identify signature taxa and proteins in saliva. Our baseline analyses revealed contrasting interplay between the genus Neisseria and Lactobacillus and Ligilactobacillus genera across the spectrum of CI. The group specific signature profiles enabled us to identify bacterial genera and protein groups associated with CI stages in PD. Our study describes compositional dynamics of saliva across the spectrum of CI in PD and paves the way for developing non-invasive biomarker strategies to predict the risk of CI progression in PD.

Autologous bone remains the gold standard bone substitute in clinical practice. Therefore, the microarchitecture of newly developed synthetic bone substitutes, which reflects the spatial distribution of materials in the scaffold, aims to recapitulate the natural bone microarchitecture. However, the natural bone microarchitecture is optimized to obtain a mechanically stable, lightweight structure adapted to the biomechanical loading situation. In the context of synthetic bone substitutes, the application of a Triply Periodic Minimum Surface (TPMS) algorithm can yield stable lightweight microarchitectures that, despite their demanding architectural complexity, can be produced by additive manufacturing. In this study, we applied the TPMS derivative Adaptive Density Minimal Surfaces (ADMS) algorithm to produce scaffolds from hydroxyapatite (HA) using a lithography-based layer-by-layer methodology and compared them with an established highly osteoconductive lattice microarchitecture. We characterized them for compression strength, osteoconductivity, and bone regeneration. The in vivo results, based on a rabbit calvaria defect model, showed that bony ingrowth into ADMS constructs as a measure of osteoconduction depended on minimal constriction as it limited the maximum apparent pore diameter in these scaffolds to 1.53 mm. Osteoconduction decreased significantly at a diameter of 1.76 mm. The most suitable ADMS microarchitecture was as osteoconductive as a highly osteoconductive orthogonal lattice microarchitecture in noncritical- and critical-size calvarial defects. However, the compression strength and microarchitectural integrity in vivo were significantly higher for scaffolds with their microarchitecture based on the ADMS algorithm when compared with high-connectivity lattice microarchitectures. Therefore, bone substitutes with high osteoconductivity can be designed with the advantages of the ADMS-based microarchitectures. As TPMS and ADMS microarchitectures are true lightweight structures optimized for high mechanical stability with a minimal amount of material, such microarchitectures appear most suitable for bone substitutes used in clinical settings to treat bone defects in weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing sites.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of recycling of lithium disilicate (LD), surface treatment and thermocycling (TC) on the bond strength (SBS) to resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blocks of LD were made according to the recycling cycle, with 24 blocks for each strategy: Control-conventional sintering; 1R (1 recycling cycle) and 3R (3 recycling cycles). For the recycling groups, blocks were waxed (10x10x3mm), mounted in a silicone ring, poured with investment material, and then residues of sintered LD blocks were pressed by the lost wax technique. The residual LD was reused as described until reach 3R. Afterwards, the blocks were embedded in acrylic resin, sanded and divided (n=15) according to the factors "surface treatment" (HF20s+Silane and HF120s+Silane and Monobond Etch&Prime- MEP) and TC (with/10.000 cycles and without). After surface treatment, cylinders (Ø:2mm) of resin cement were made and submitted to SBS test (100KgF,1mm/min). Data (MPa) were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA, Tukey's test (5%) and Weibull analysis. Failure analysis was performed with stereomicroscope. RESULTS: ANOVA revealed that all factors were significant (P=.000*). The group 3RMEP(105.09±19.49) presented the highest SBS among the experimental groups. 1RHF20sTc(7.50±1.97) group had the lowest SBS, similar to the CHF20sTc(15.69±3.77), 1RHF20s(15.12±3.03), 1RHF120sTc(14.60±3.43) and 3RHF20sTc(15.65±0.97). The Weibull modulus and characteristic strength varied among the experimental groups (P=0.0). Failure analysis revealed adhesive and mixed types. CONCLUSION: The recycling of DL ceramics increases the SBS to resin cement when the ceramic is treated with HF120s+S or MEP.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the impact of preparation design and material types on fracture strength in maxillary premolars endocrowns after thermodynamic aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty two-rooted maxillary premolar crowns underwent endodontic treatment (N = 80, n = 10). The teeth were categorized into ten groups (4-mm deep with no intracanal extension lithium disilicate glass ceramic & multilayer zirconia endocrowns (LE0 & ZE0); 4-mm deep with 4-mm intracanal extension in one canal (LE1 & ZE1); 4-mm deep with 2-mm intracanal extensions in both canals (LE2 & ZE2); flat overlays with no endocore (LO & ZO); glass fiber reinforced post & core and crown (LC & ZC)). After cementation, all specimens were subjected to 1500 thermocycles and 1,200,000 chewing cycles with an axial occlusal load of 49 N. A static loading test was performed at a non-axial 45° loading using a universal testing machine and failure modes (Type I: restoration debonding; Type II: restoration fracture; Type III: restoration/tooth complex fracture above bone level; Type IV: restoration/tooth complex fracture below bone level) were evaluated using a stereoscope. Data were ananalzed using 2-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests (alpha = 0.05). RESULTS: The endocrowns manufactured from multilayered zirconia and pressed lithium disilicate glass ceramic exhibited a fracture load ranging between 1334 ± 332 N and 756 ± 150 N, with ZC presenting the highest and LE2 the lowest values. The differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: All endocrowns tested in this study performed similar considering the different designs and materials tested. The distribution of fracture modes did not differ significantly depending on the design of the restoration and the type of material used.

OBJECTIVES: Lithium disilicate (LDS) based glass ceramics are indispensable materials in the field of prosthetic dentistry due to their strength and excellent esthetics. Recently, novel fully crystallized LDS for the milling process have been introduced to the market, requiring only chairside polishing before delivery. Since limited data is available about subjecting this material to glazing, this study aimed to evaluate the wear properties, fracture resistance, and optical properties of the newly introduced fully crystallized LDS after glazing. METHODS: Lithium disilicate glass-ceramics (fully crystallized (LiSiCAD) and partially crystallized types (EmaxCAD), of shade A3, were used in the present study. The fully crystallized specimens were subjected to a glazing firing cycle in a furnace (LiSiCAD-G) and compared to a polished fully crystallized counterpart (LiSiCAD-P, negative control) and a glazed partially crystallized LDS (EmaxCAD, positive control). Rectangular-shaped ceramic specimens (n = 10, 12 × 6.5 × 1.5 mm) and enamel antagonists were used to test the wear resistance in a specially designed wear machine built at the Department of Oral Technology, University of Bonn, Germany. The volumetric enamel loss of antagonists was measured by means of overlapping virtual 3D models derived from micro-CT scans for the teeth before and after the wear test. The weight loss of ceramic specimens in milligrams was measured after 100,000 and 200,000 wear cycles. A spectrophotometer was used to calculate the CIELAB color parameters of the ceramic specimens against black and white backgrounds to measure the translucency. Fracture resistance was also assessed after thermodynamic fatigue using a universal testing machine until fracture at a 1 mm/min crosshead speed. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and the significance level was set at α = 0.05. RESULTS: EmaxCAD and LisiCAD-G groups showed significantly higher mean ceramic weight loss after 100,000 cycles (2 ± 0.3 mg and 1.93 ± 0.2 mg, respectively) than LisiCAD-P group (0.78 ± 0.19 mg). Glazed LiSiCAD specimens demonstrated significantly higher ΔE values from shade A3 compared to polished LiSiCAD. There was no significant difference in ΔE between LiSiCAD-G and EmaxCAD. For fracture resistance, no significant difference was observed between LiSiCAD-G and LiSiCAD-P before or after aging. CONCLUSIONS: The glazed fully crystallized LDS was superior to the partially crystallized one with regard to wear resistance but showed more color changes than the polished fully crystallized one. Furthermore, polishing of fully crystallized LDS could still be considered a better option than glazing when aesthetics is a primary prerequisite.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The success rate of monolithic polymer-infiltrated ceramic posterior crowns after 1 year is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this controlled, randomized, and double-blind clinical trial was to evaluate the performance of posterior complete crowns in polymer-infiltrated and lithium disilicate ceramics and to assess the impact of oral rehabilitation on esthetic satisfaction, quality of life, and periodontal health. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 33 crowns were provided in 18 participants allocated to 2 groups: Control (Lithium disilicate-IPS e.max CAD; Ivoclar AG) and Experimental (Polymer-infiltrated ceramic-Vita Enamic; Vita Zahnfabrik). The crowns were evaluated before treatment (T0) and after 1 (T1), 6 (T2), and 12 (T3) months by using modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria, visual analog scales (VASs), oral impacts on daily performances (OIDP), and periodontal parameters. Survival analysis was performed by using Kaplan-Meier followed by the log-rank test (α=.05). The OIDP and USPHS data were analyzed descriptively while VASs for esthetic satisfaction and periodontal parameters were statistically evaluated by using the Mann-Whitney Friedman, and Wilcoxon post hoc tests. RESULTS: For 18 participants with a mean age of 47.2 years, 19 crowns were manufactured in lithium disilicate and 14 in polymer-infiltrated ceramic. The Kaplan-Meier test revealed similar survival rates of 92.5% for polymer-infiltrated ceramic and 94.7% for lithium disilicate (P>.05). The analysis of periodontal parameters revealed a significant increase in the bleeding on probing (BOP) for polymer-infiltrated ceramics (P=.032) but for lithium disilicate, it was not significant (P=.387). CONCLUSIONS: Survival rates between the evaluated materials were not significantly different, with acceptable clinical performance after 1 year of follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the effect of irradiation on the push-out bond strength of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine to radicular dentin. METHODOLOGY: A total of 60 extracted mature human teeth with single root canals were categorized into two groups (irradiated and non-irradiated) (n=30). Each group was further divided into two sub-groups based on cements used (Biodentine and MTA). Then, a cumulative radiation dose of 60 Gy was divided into 30 fractions (two Gy for every fraction) and administered for five successive days per week over six weeks. Obturation was then performed using MTA and Biodentine. Afterwards, 1.5 mm thick horizontal sections were procured from the middle one-third of all the specimens and then subjected to push-out bond test. Results were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance with post-hoc Tukey's test. RESULTS: The bond strength of Biodentine and MTA to irradiated teeth was lower than non-irradiated teeth. Highest push-out bond strength was observed in non-irradiated specimens filled with Biodentine (p=0), followed by irradiated specimens filled with Biodentine (p=0); non-irradiated specimens filled with MTA (p=0); and irradiated specimens filled with MTA (p=0.9). CONCLUSION: The push-out bond strength of Biodentine and MTA to root canal dentin decreased significantly post irradiation.
